Twitter achieves 10 billion tweets

Twitter has racked up more than 10 billion tweets since its launch more than three years ago, but is likely to achieve the feat again in little over 200 days.

Tuesday, 16 March 2010

According to GigaTweet, a website that tracks the microblogging service, Twitter's growing popularity over the past year is causing an exponential increase in the number of messages being sent.

In 2007, there were just 5,000 tweets being sent each day, a figure that escalated to 2.5 million by the beginning of 2009.

However, that number rocketed to 50 million tweets per day, or 600 per second, by the end of February 2010, and shows no signs of slowing.

If growth in the number of tweets being sent continues on its current trajectory, the site will hit the 20 billion mark in just 199 days, Gigatweet estimates.

Twitter has become one of the most popular social networking sites both among users and companies seeking to market their promotions.

However, proposals are currently being considered for the Advertising Association to more tightly regulate digital media and bring brand activity on the microblogging site under its regulatory remit.
