28m iPads could be sold by 2011

Apple could sell 28 million iPads in 2011, having a knock on effect on the amount of traditional notebooks sold, new research by UBS Investment has found.

Maynard Um, an analyst from the firm, stated in the Apple Insider Blog, that these estimates could still be "conservative".

He wrote: "We believe that a majority of this impact is occurring on the lower end of PC sales as the iPad is priced close enough to this range that it becomes attractive to consumers looking to make purchases within this segment."

There is no evidence that the iPad has had a negative impact on the sale of Macs yet but Mr Um also claims that consumers who purchase the tablet device may be more willing to delay upgrading their home computers and laptops.

Apple has announced that iPads are now shipped within 24 hours from its online store, suggesting that it can now keep up with demand.

Several rivals to the iPad have recently emerged including the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Toshiba Folio, which both use Google's Android operating system.

The IAB has published a White Paper discussing advertising and marketing on the iPad and other tablets. For more information, click here.
