The BBC has launched a consultation for plans to deliver programming over broadband directly to TV sets.
Known as Project Canvas, the proposal would enable consumers to watch shows on the iPlayer and on-demand services via their television.
The BBC Executive wants to create a joint venture to establish a common standard for internet protocol television (IPTV) and has applied to the BBC Trust for permission to move forward with it.
"We will be scrutinising it to ensure the best possible outcome for licence fee payers," said BBC Trustee Diane Coyle. "We are now inviting all interested parties and members of the public to tell us what they think."
The proposal outlines how the BBC would enable delivery of IPTV. Plans include the need for no monthly subscription and a broadband connection for the agreed devices.
An electronic programme guide would also be included in the system, so users could choose between on-demand and scheduled broadcasts.
Earlier this week saw the BBC Trust refuse permission for the use of broadband-only local video news, which is rejected on the grounds that it would not help viewers achieve what they want.
