The combined forces of Bing and Yahoo! experienced a 24.56 per cent share of the search market in the US for the four weeks ending August 28th, a new report from Experian Hitwise has found.

The Hitwise Search Engine Analysis report also showed that Google accounted for 71.59 per cent of searches conducted in the US, while the other 62 search engines shared just 4.26 per cent.

Bing and Yahoo!, which combined services in the US and Canada in the week beginning August 23rd, received 14.32 per cent and 10.24 per cent respectively.

The report also found that the traffic to social networking and e-retailer websites from search engines doubled in this period.

Two-word searches were the most popular with US consumers as they accounted for 23.71 per cent of all queries while longer searches, typically five to eight words long, declined by two per cent.

The merger between Bing and Yahoo! means that Yahoo! receives its search results from the Microsoft-owned search engine.

It is thought that this deal was reached in order to cut costs and to possibly erode Google's domination of the search engine market.
