Retailers have been advised to expand their online presence in light of research showing UK consumers are spending 40 per cent more over the web than their US counterparts.
The survey, carried out by Jupiter Research, also found that 45 per cent of all internet shoppers have been influenced by regular promotions.
LinkShare, the company that commissioned the research, noted that consumers are using the web to make more informed decisions by comparing products and reading reviews.
Co-president of LinkShare Yasuhisa Iida comments: "It's clear that retailers looking to weather the current economic storm should expand their presence online and continue to look for ways to deepen their customer relationships online."
A recent study by E-consultancy and DoubleClick found that ten per cent of all online sales now go through comparison shopping engines.
