Facebook is expected to make over $4 billion (£2.5 billion) from advertising in 2011, it has been estimated by eMarketer.
This is double what the social media site made from ads in 2010. It is thought that $2.19 billion (£1.3 billion) of advertising revenue for Facebook will be generated in the US.
Debra Aho Williamson, principal analyst at the research firm and author of upcoming report Worldwide Social Network Ad Spending: 2011 Outlook, stated that the social networking site will enjoy a global presence this year.
She said: "2010 was the year that Facebook firmly established itself as a major force not only in social network advertising but all of online advertising."
In more general terms, social network advertising is expected to account for 10.8 per cent of the online advertising market in 2011.
US marketers are predicted to increase the amount they spend on social network ads by 55 per cent over the next 12 months.
A recent study by eConsultancy found that 19 per cent of consumers play games through a social media site on a regular basis.
