New figures from Nielsen Online have shown that Facebook was the most popular website in the UK last month.
Facebook accounted for 12.7 per cent of all UK web users' online time in April, compared with 7.2 per cent in the same month last year.
Other popular websites and applications included MSN/Windows Live, Google, eBay, Yahoo!, AOL, the BBC, YouTube, Microsoft and Apple.
These ten web brands accounted for 45 per cent of all web users' online time overall.
On average, each internet user spent 22 hours and 20 minutes surfing the web or utilising online applications last month, up 34 per cent compared with last year.
Alex Burmaster, communications director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Nielsen Online, notes that Facebook and MSN/Windows Live together attracted nearly 11 billion of the 48 billion minutes spent online by Britons.
"That's over one in every five minutes and highlights just how competitive the online space is for both publishers and advertisers when it comes to capturing consumer attention," he says.
Facebook currently has more than 200 million active users worldwide, 70 per cent of which are based outside of the UK.
Over 3.5 billion minutes are spent on the social network every day.
