Social networking website Facebook is working on a lighter, simplified version of its service to be used on mobile phones.

Dubbed Facebook Lite, the social media offering would also be ideal for narrowband internet connections.
Representatives from the site are currently testing the new platform in India and have plans to roll out the service to nations where broadband is not widely available.
A statement from the company indicates that trials are being run in Asia, where new users are emerging all the time and where there is a demand for a simpler social networking system to the one which has developed in the west.
"Facebook Lite is a fast-loading, simplified version of Facebook that enables people to make comments, accept friend requests, write on people's walls and look at photos and status updates," the statement added.
News of the development comes in the week that Facebook bought content-sharing service Friendfeed, a portal that can conduct real-time search.
Users of Friendfeed are able to keep updated with their friends' activities and share a variety of online content.
Facebook said that the Silicon Valley-based group will continue to function as normal for the foreseeable future until the two companies have devised new strategies.
