Facebook to make a billion dollars

12/03/2010

According to figures released by an industry blog, Facebook could generate more than a billion dollars in revenue in 2010.

Facebook could generate revenue of £725 million, more than $1 billion, according to new figures being reported.

The projections reflect the increasingly strong performances of the social media site in recent years.

Estimates come from Inside Facebook, an industry blog which has proven to be accurate in the past and is reportedly much loved of by advertisers.

Last year Facebook is believed to have pulled in up to £420 million.

Advertising provided the vast majority of that revenue, according to the figures. More than half is said to have come from 'performance advertising.'

The level of consumer interaction and targeting available to advertisers using facebook to promote their brand or product has made it a prime commercial tool.

Virtual social games, such as the phenomenally popular Farmville, have been some of the biggest users of this type of advertising.

Facebook and Microsoft announced this year that the social media site will now handle its own display advertising, a function the computer giant had performed for the site since 2007.
