Global online ad growth predicted

Global internet advertising is set to grow by 9.5 per cent in 2009 and then increase by 12 to 13 per cent over the next three years, according to media buyer ZenithOptimedia.

The company also suggests that online will be the only advertising medium to expand in 2009, Reuters reports.

Figures from the firm claim that there will be a 15 per cent hike in paid online search adverts this year, while the internet display and classified ad markets will be six and two per cent up respectively.

Overall global advertising markets are expected to grow 0.9 per cent in 2010 following a 10.2 per cent fall this year.

By 2012, they should have reached growth of five per cent, which suggests that the internet advertising sector is growing quicker than the industry as a whole.

The report said: "It is normal for ad expenditure to exaggerate general economic trends. When the economy shrinks, ad expenditure shrinks faster and by more."

It added that the ad market will outperform the economy once recovery is complete.

Back in October, the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising and BDO Stoy Hayward Bellwether report showed that British firms increased their web advertising budgets in the third quarter of 2009 - the first time this had occurred for over a year.
