Google acquires visual search engine

Google has purchased a visual search engine used by shoppers to match different fashions together, in a deal reported to be worth upwards of $100 million (£64.3 million).

Like.com chief executive Munjal Shah confirmed the buyout on his company's website, but did not give any specifics on the price, which the Wall Street Journal estimates will run to nine figures.

Established in 2006, the search engine claims to be the first to have brought visual search to ecommerce.

It has had great success with its automated cross-matching system, which provides customers with a way to find and sort shoes, handbags, clothes and jewellery based on colour, design, shape and other such characteristics.

Mr Shah wrote: "We see joining Google as a way to supersize our vision and supercharge our passion."

Google spokesperson Andrew Pederson welcomed its latest acquisition, explaining that the team at Like.com will work with Google's own ecommerce experts.

In April, Google acquired another visual search engine, Plink, which it integrated into its Google Goggles mobile app, allowing people to search using pictures taken on their camera phones.

Users can search using pictures of books and DVDs, landmarks, barcodes, logos, artwork and text.
