Search engine giant Google is planning to move into consumer electronics with a new music streaming service, which is controlled by Android smartphones.
It is thought that Google will release the new hardware later this year, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
The Google-branded product is predicted to wirelessly play music on other devices in the home using an Android operated remote.
In May 2011, the firm showed off a music system dubbed Project Tungsten that can be controlled by Android handsets at its I/O Developer Conference.
Google has now filed a request with the US Federal Communications Commission to test the entertainment system.
It was also reported that the new system will play songs from Google's recently-launched music player on Google-designed speakers and other devices.
Google still makes the majority of its revenue from internet search - a platform expected to grow even further.
According to a recent prediction from eMarketer, search, banner and video ads will account for 80 per cent of all online advertising spend in the US by 2016.
