Google has announced a multimillion-pound 'technology community centre' in London, which will help foster new internet companies in the capital's east end.
The building will offer a shared space to up-and-coming media and tech companies, at the so-called 'Silicon Roundabout' in Shoreditch and Old Street.
It is being supported by the government, which intends to create a rival in the capital to Silicon Valley with its Tech City project.
Google has taken out a long-lease on the building, located on Bonhill Street.
David Singleton, engineering director at Google UK, said: "We announced our involvement in the Tech City project last year and we've been working hard to make this vision a reality.
"East London is already home to hundreds of innovative British startups and has huge potential for economic growth and new jobs over the coming years."
The news comes shortly after Twitter announced its intention to establish European headquarters in Dublin, which had concerned some in London that the UK capital was being overlooked by the most forward-thinking technology firms.
However, it is hoped that the Tech City scheme will ensure that London is at the forefront of the European and global tech sectors.
