Govt denies new tax on online advertising

05/05/2009

The Government has sought to distance itself from press reports that it will impose a new tax on online advertising.

A Digital Britain spokesperson told the IAB that the Government has “no plans to impose any new taxes” to fund public service offerings on the internet.

The statement follows reports that a tax on online advertising - a so-called 'multi-click tax' - might be unveiled in Lord Carter's Digital Britain final report due for publication at the end of June.

The rumours of the new tax began circulating following stories in this weekend's Daily Mail and News of the World.

The stories fuelled speculation that firms could be forced to to start charging for emailing, internet searches and social networking, which are used by millions of Britons every day.
