The Guardian's iPad app has reached more than 500,000 downloads, three months after launching on the Apple App store.

On Christmas Day alone, the app was downloaded 23,000 times, according to parent company Guardian News and Media.

The app has been free to download since its launch, due to a sponsorship deal with Channel 4, which saw the broadcaster displaying ads on the app, but from January 13th, subscribers will be asked to pay £9.99 a month.

Users who download the app after this date will still be entitled to a week's free trial. This announcement follows the inclusion of a new section of the app.

On January 7th, the app included news and articles from the Guardian's Weekend magazine and this will now be a regular section.

Merope Mills, editor of Weekend, said: "Weekend magazine's stunning photography perfectly suits the form and the clean, modern design of our app on iPad."

Last week, the newspaper reported that over 80 million catch-up TV apps were downloaded to smartphones over the festive period.

The BBC's iPlayer app was downloaded 22,000 times on Christmas Day and 135,000 times on Boxing Day.
