The Guardian's iPhone app has seen nearly 70,000 downloads in its first month, according to new figures from the newspaper.

It was launched on December 14th and had been downloaded 68,979 times from Apple's App Store as of January 12th.

The app costs £2.39 to download and offers access to the Guardian's news articles, features, comment, image galleries and audio content, as well as an offline mode that can be used when the iPhone is not connected to the web.

It is currently available in most European countries in addition to the US, Australia and Canada.

Emily Bell, director of digital content for Guardian News & Media, says the newspaper is "thrilled" with the success of the app in its first month.

"The feedback we have received from users has been excellent, yet also extremely informative in terms of features and functionality that can be improved in the future," she adds.

An in-house team at the Guardian designed the app, which was then built by 2ergo.

The newspaper's website for mobile browsers is still in operation and attracted 927,000 unique users in November 2009.

Earlier this month, Apple revealed that over five billion apps have been downloaded from its App Store worldwide to date.
