'Half' the UK is on Facebook

03/03/2011

Facebook is used by half the population in the UK, as the social networking site now has 30 million users in the country, it was claimed by Joanna Shields, Facebook Europe's vice-president.

She announced at a media conference: "We can announce today that we have reached 30 million in the UK, which we are really excited about," quotes the Daily Telegraph.

This is an increase of four million active users since July last year, when 26 million Brits had signed up to the social media site.

The social networking site, which was established by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004, has around 500 million active users across the globe.

At least half of these users log in on any given day, with more than 700 billion minutes being spent on the site each month.

Tim Elkington, Director of Research and Strategy at the IAB, comments: "These claims are certainly supported by the latest UKOM data. This shows that Facebook reached 25.9 million users aged 2+ in the UK during January 2011 – about 43% of the UK population in this age group and 65% of this age group that actually went online during the month.

"During the month Facebook users spent nearly seven and a half hours using the site on average and viewed an average of 856 pages each. According to UKOM, Facebook’s reach is also up year on year, from 23.9 million users in January 2010.

"This is just an example of the sort of data that UKOM can provide. For more information visit http://www.ukom.uk.net/."
