Internet sales increasing

07/09/2010

The number of purchases made online in August increased by 17.8 per cent compared to the same time last year, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) has found.

It is believed that this increase is due to parents sending their children back to school and the emergence of new autumn/winter trends in clothing.

Stephen Robertson, director general of the BRC, said: "The rise of shopping habits such as researching and reserving at home then collecting in store, which blur the distinction between traditional and electronic retailing, are increasingly contributing to online retailing's rapid growth."

According to IMRG, the amount of money spent annually on online shopping in Europe will reach £456 billion (550 billion euros) by the end of the year.

While Europeans only account for 24 per cent of consumers online, they account for 35 per cent of total online sales.

It seems that some firms are deciding to get involved with online retailing as sales increase.

The Telegraph Media Group has launched, Telegraph Fashion, a new beauty and fashion website, where consumers can purchase items and read editorial content.
