The global IPTV market will expand by 32 per cent per year on average over the next six years, ABI Research has predicted.
By the end of 2014, almost 79 million people around the world will have subscribed to IPTV services, the research company says in its latest report.
Growth will be driven by the high-speed broadband sector, as well as the changing needs of both users and businesses.
Countries such as France, the Netherlands, South Korea and Hong Kong are likely to benefit from the expansion of the IPTV market first as they already have established high-speed broadband networks, says Serene Fong, industry analyst for ABI Research.
However, developing countries such as China - which was recently revealed by the China Internet Network Information Centre to have almost 300 million web users - will eventually catch up in terms of subscriber numbers, she predicts.
"Some telecom operators which are faced with thinning margins are deploying high-speed access networking technologies to challenge incumbent satellite and cable operators," Fong comments.
This year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas was dominated by announcements regarding new IPTV technology and services from companies such as Yahoo!, Netflix and LG Electronics.
