Culture secretary Jeremy Hunt has welcomed the first trial of 4G mobile technology, which is occurring across London, as it will help keep the UK at the forefront of the "digital revolution".

Mobile company O2 has launched a nine-month trial across 40 miles of London, which will see consumers, businesses and venue owners being provided with the latest 4G technology.

The firm will gather data about the performance of the network and receive feedback from users to see how it can be improved, ahead of a spectrum auction next year.

Hunt said: "We welcome O2's 4G trial in London, which is a positive example of how firms are continuing to invest in, and develop, the type of communications services that will keep the UK at the forefront of the digital revolution.

"Initiatives such as this London trial support the government's objective of stimulating innovation, as well as investing in delivering long-run economic growth for the UK."

Last week, director of strategic policy and portfolio at BT Sean Williams told the Telegraph that the UK will have the best broadband in Europe by 2015 or shortly after.
