One in five people in the UK has never sent an email, a BT poll of 2,000 Brits has found, in a bid to support the Give An Hour Get Online campaign.

The poll also found that 40 per cent of people who are already online use email to reconnect with someone while 53 per cent have use Facebook to get back in contact.

It was also found that 47 per cent of people who have lost contact with a loved one would like to reconnect online but only nine per cent wanted to get back in touch with a former flame.

BT and Gabby Logan, who is fronting the Get It Together campaign, have recorded a short film explaining the benefits of email and how to send them.

The Get It Together project is a subsidiary of the Go On Give an Hour campaign, which was launched by the UK's Digital Champion Martha Lane-Fox last week.

As part of the campaign, consumers were encouraged to spend the extra hour gained when the clocks went back to help someone get online, as almost nine million Brits have never used the internet.

Lane-Fox said: "There are still 8.7 million people in the UK who've never made a free Skype call, explored and expanded their interests or got a great deal online.

"Yet, it's impossible to imagine life without the web for anyone who uses it regularly."
