Orange and Twitter sign new deal

17/11/2009

Twitter and Orange have signed a deal that will allow the mobile operator's customers to send and receive updates from the microblogging website directly from their handsets using text messaging.

Orange, which launched its version of the Apple iPhone in the UK on November 10th, has also become the first mobile firm to offer photo sharing on Twitter via MMS.

Customers will have full control over which Twitter alerts are sent to their phones and can choose to receive tweets from everyone they follow on the service, specific users or direct messages.

There will also be an option to set times for receiving such content.

Mark Watts Jones, head of product management for Orange UK, says the company has noted how Twitter "is transforming the dynamics of real-time search and breaking news".

"We're delighted to extend the value of the service by bringing it to mobile, enabling our customers to view and update their Twitter streams and giving them the unique ability to upload photos directly via MMS," he adds.
