The revamped BBC iPlayer is expected to be introduced this week after a four-month beta-testing period.
The new version will integrate social networking features, which will allow users to assimilate their Facebook or Twitter accounts with the service in order to add a social dimension to their viewing and listening.
Other new features include a favourites tab, which allows users to list programmes that they enjoy watching and automatically adds new episodes once they have been aired.
This service will also be implemented on a range of devices including mobiles, as the iPlayer can be accessed remotely.
The iPlayer will make recommendations for programmes that a user may like to watch based on their previous viewing behaviour.
Since the service was announced in May and beta-testing has been carried out, 18,000 consumers have signed up to the social networking features and linked the service to their Facebook or Twitter homepages.
Just under 700,000 have placed a programme on their favourites, adding an average of 2.5 episodes each, with the most popular being Sherlock, Eastenders and Top Gear.
At least eight per cent of total iPlayer users have so far used the beta version.
