Search market grows 41 per cent

The global search market has grown 41 per cent over the last year with new research revealing there were over 113 billion searches recorded in July 2009.

Digital analyst comScore suggests that Google was still significantly ahead of its competitors, generating 76.7 billion searches or 67.5 per cent of the market share during the month.

According to the data, Google saw a 58 per cent increase in user numbers year-on-year.

Indeed, every search engine except AOL LLC registered growth in visitor numbers over the period.

With 7.8 per cent of visitors in July, Yahoo! can boast the second highest market share, while Chinese search engine Baidu saw just under eight billion users access its services to be regarded as the third most popular portal in this sector.

Other findings from comScore included Europe accounting for the highest share of searches at 32.1 per cent and Latin America exhibiting the heaviest search behaviour per person.

In the latter region, the average individual had 13 search usage days in July and 130 searches per searcher.

Last month, comScore revealed that Americans alone conducted nearly 13.6 billion core searches in July this year, with Google sites accounting for 64.7 per cent of the overall market share.
