Sony is planning to launch a music and video streaming service, which will be accessible via Playstation 3 consoles in the UK by the end of the year.

The announcement was made yesterday (September 1st), at the start of the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin.

Called Sony Qriocity, the subscription-based service will enable users to download high definition songs and movies via the internet and watch them on Playstation 3 consoles, Sony TVs and laptops.

It will be unveiled across five countries including Britain, Germany, France, Italy and Spain this autumn.

Users can download movies from Paramount Pictures, MGM Studios, Lionsgate and 20th Century Fox and the firm hopes to expand the service so that it offers games too.

Kazuo Hirai, president of Sony's networked products and services group, said: "We are excited to offer our customers high-quality, cloud-based entertainment experiences across many of Sony's network-enabled devices."

The technology firm also unveiled its 3D laptop, which will be available in 2011. The device can display 3D video content and games at 1080p resolution, Cnet News reports.
