Spotify hits 1m user mark in UK

Music streaming service Spotify now has more than one million users in the UK, according to figures revealed at the Radio Reborn conference this week.

Paul Brown, Spotify's UK managing director, said at the MediaGuardian event yesterday (April 27th) that "a decent proportion" of these are paying subscribers, although he declined to specify exactly how many users this equates to.

Speaking to paidContent, Brown said: "In a very short space of time, the public has responded pretty well.

"We are at the beginning of this - we've got some very good ad sales people in our UK office, they know what they're doing and the company knows what it's doing."

He went on to state that Spotify could follow the example set by traditional radio when it comes to the "editorialisation" and localisation of content to expand its business model in the future, hinting that this could come about through partnerships with other organisations similar to its current tie-up with 7digital.

Brown joined Spotify earlier this month from US online music radio service Pandora. He has also previously worked at Sony Music UK and is a non executive director at Slicethepie and a consultant with Topspin Media.

Spotify marked its third birthday on April 1st this year.
