The Super Bowl finale set a new Twitter record, with an average of 10,000 tweets being sent per second over the last three minutes of the match.

A total of 13.7 million posts relating to the Super Bowl were made on Sunday (February 5th) evening, Twitter revealed in a blog post.

During the last three minutes of the game, the peak in the number of tweets sent per second reached 12,233, with the average being 10,000.

That is compared to a peak in tweets per second of 4,064 in 2011 and just 27 in 2008.

Madonna's half-time performance also attracted an average of 8,000 tweets per second.

Meanwhile David Beckham's collection for H&M TV ad became a trending topic on Twitter, as well as MakeitPlatinum and SoLongVampires relating to other commercials shown.

The Super Bowl has now broken the record for tweets per second relating to a sporting event.

The previous highest number of tweets sent per second during a sporting event occurred during the Women's football World Cup final last year between America and Japan.
