Twitter is now one of the 100 most popular websites in the UK, according to Hitwise.
The microblogging service was ranked in 91st place for the week ending February 7th, rising above the likes of Expedia, Gumtree and easyJet.
It is also now the seventh most popular social networking site overall in the UK, rising from 23rd place three weeks ago.
Robin Goad, research director of Hitwise, notes that Twitter has already seen its traffic rise more than threefold this year, with most of this growth taking place as a result of increased media coverage of Twitter users such as Stephen Fry and Jonathan Ross.
He goes on to suggest that part of Twitter's success can be attributed to the increasing number of websites and services that have been established to cater for users of the site, such as Twitpic, which lets users upload images to their profiles.
"Twitpic is still small in comparison to Flickr and Photobucket, but is growing rapidly. As the chart below illustrates, UK internet traffic to the site has increased more than fivefold already this year," Goad says.
Hitwise noted in January that UK traffic to Twitter had risen by almost 1,000 per cent in the previous 12 months.
