During the past twelve months membership of Twitter has swelled rapidly.
Twitter has grown by 1500 per cent in the past year, it has been revealed.
The news comes as the social media site, which is now estimated to boast approximately 75 million users, announced the launch of a new search advertising model based upon that used by Google.
Though Twitter has been valued at nearly £1 billion, it had struggled to find a way to exploit its popularity to create revenue.
Advertising displayed on search results could prove to be the solution to this conundrum as a number of big names have reportedly shown interest.
Biz Stone, co-founder of the site, told users in the newsletter distributed this week that the total number of staff employed by Twitter had risen by 500 per cent to 140.
Mr. Stone, who also revealed that there now more than 70,000 registered Twitter applications, released the information to update users on developments within the company.
In reference to projects such as Fledgling and Hope 140, schemes inspired by Twitter users, he claimed that Twitter was "more than a triumph of technology...a triumph of humanity."
