Twitter has expanded its sales team in an attempt to generate more revenue from its free service.
Adam Bain, former president of the Fox Audience Network at News Corporation, will serve as president of global revenue, while Brent Hill will move from his post at Google as head of financial services for the Midwest of the US to be director of sales for the same region.
The expansion of the micro-blogging site's team of sales executives has been taken as a sign that the company will focus more heavily on revenue creation in the future.
A statement on the appointments from Twitter's chief operating officer Dick Costolo read: "With Adam and Brent joining the team, we now have senior sales executives from a wide spectrum of industry leaders, including Fox, Google, Facebook and Yelp, comprising our leadership team.
"We expect this team to build on our already strong momentum in providing promotions and deals that bring value to both users and an increasing number of brands."
Twitter introduced advertising in the form of Promoted Tweets earlier this year. These allow companies to pay to have their tweets appear at the top of the stream when people search.
With almost 150 million users, the venture capital-funded site is also developing tools for use by businesses to improve their social media performance.
The New York Times reports that this will be developed into a commercial account product that will then be sold to companies and advertisers.
