New figures from Twitter have revealed that its users are now posting 50 million tweets a day, up from 5,000 in 2007.
This means that Twitter members are making 600 tweets a second, according to a blog post by Kevin Weil, analytics lead for the microblogging site.
He sketches out the growth of the site in terms of the number of tweets posted over the course of the last three years, revealing that members made 5,000 posts a day in 2007 before rising to 300,000 by the time 2008 began.
This rose further to 2.5 million daily tweets by the start of 2009, in which year the number of posts surged by 1,400 per cent to reach 35 million a day.
Weil says that the number of daily tweets made by Twitter's users represents just a small part of the overall picture of usage of the social media site.
"Tweet deliveries are a much higher number because once created, tweets must be delivered to multiple followers," he explains, adding: "Then there's search and so many other ways to measure and understand growth across this information network."
The figures appear to correspond with the growth in Twitter traffic recorded by a number of research firms in the last few years.
In the UK, Hitwise noted a year ago that the website entered its list of the top 100 sites in terms of visits in the week ending February 7th, after traffic to Twitter had trebled since the start of 2009.
