Over one billion tweets are now posted on Twitter every month, according to research from Royal Pingdom.

The study shows that Twitter hit the one billion milestone in December 2009 before increasing to 1.2 billion in January this year, representing some 40 million tweets a day.
It says that the number of tweets made via the site and third party applications has grown by 100 per cent since August 2009 and suggests that 1.4 billion tweets will have been posted by the end of this month if the growth rate stays constant.
Royal Pingdom also notes that 16 as many tweets were made last month as in January 2009, while the same month registered more daily tweets than those made over the course of September 2008.
In a blog post, the company says: "Over the past few months there has been plenty of speculation around the web that Twitter’s growth has stalled, but if we look at activity on Twitter in terms of the number of tweets, this is far from the truth."
Figures from Experian Hitwise suggest that Twitter was the third most visited social networking site in the UK in the week ending February 6th, attracting 2.13 per cent of all visits made to websites in this category.
