The number of users from around the world visiting Twitter in June amounted to 93 million, which is an increase of 109 per cent compared to last year, new research from comScore has found.
The fastest rate of growth was experienced in Latin America as it reported a 305 per cent increase to 15.4 million users.
Asia Pacific climbed 243 per cent to 25.1 million users, the Middle East and Africa witnessed a 142 per cent jump to five million users and Europe experienced a 106 per cent increase to 22 million.
Graham Mudd, comScore vice president of search and media, said: "As more users around the world have become acquainted with connecting and expressing themselves through social media, it has created an environment where new media like Twitter can emerge globally in a relatively short period of time."
He added that almost three out of four global internet users access a social networking site every month.
Twitter was the most popular in Indonesia, where 20.8 per cent of internet users visited the site during June, followed by Brazil and Venezuela.
A recent survey by MyJobGroup found that six per cent of Britain's workers have admitted to wasting an hour or more a day on social networking sites.
