UK web display ad activity rising

05/06/2009

New figures from Nielsen Online have revealed that online display ad activity in the UK is up by 21 per cent compared with last year.

The statistics include the numbers of advertisers, campaigns and ad creatives used by businesses for their online display ad initiatives and show that activity was up significantly in the first four months of 2009 compared with the same period last year.

Over 5,900 advertisers ran 11,000 display ad campaigns during each month over the research period. About 32,000 ad creatives were used by businesses for these campaigns in total, Nielsen Online says.

Businesses in the retail and finance sectors dominated the market, accounting for nearly 25 per cent of all online display ad advertisers.

Alex Burmaster, communications director for Nielsen Online, says: "The strong increase in the level of display advertising activity is reason enough for online publishers and media owners to be optimistic about the year ahead."

The research came shortly after comScore released a report revealing that Facebook was the top UK online display ad publisher in April this year, accounting for 21.6 per cent of all display ads.

Other top publishers in the UK during the month included Microsoft, eBay, AOL, Yahoo! and Google, according to the figures.
