The biggest viral music video of last year, Gangnam Style, performed by South Korean K-pop star Psy, has generated around £5 million worth of revenue for YouTube.

Hosting the video, the website made the money through advertising, thanks to the 1.2 billion times it was viewed worldwide since its release on July 15th last year.

"Outside estimates say... [Gangnam Style] has generated over $8 million (£5 million) in all-in advertising deals," said Nikesh Arora, the chief business officer at Google, which owns YouTube.

However, the deal the website has with its content creators means that they get to keep half of all advertising revenue. Therefore, the people behind the video will receive around £2.5 million, which equates to approximately 20p for each view.

It is the most viewed video on YouTube, beating the likes of Justin Bieber's Baby music video and the "Charlie Bit My Finger" clip, and became the first to break the one billion milestone.
