YouTube is launching a free movie service in the UK after striking deals with firms including Sony Pictures. More than 400 titles will be available in total.

The website has also struck a deal with UK firm Blinkbox, which will allow 165 of its titles to be watched in full for free.

Blinkbox, which usually charges for the rental of films and TV shows, will gain revenue from the advertising surrounding the video content after deciding to offer a selection of titles for free as a way of promoting its brand.

A range of films will be available including horror and cult titles. Some of the movies on offer include Dark Side of the Sun, which stars Brad Pitt, and Death Train, in which Pierce Brosnan appears.

Donagh O'Malley, YouTube's head of video partnership, said: "This is one of many efforts to ensure that people can find all the different kinds of video they want to see, from bedroom vlogs and citizen journalism reports to full-length films and TV shows."

Last week, the video-sharing site launched a new mobile version for smartphones with the aim of making access quicker for iPhone and Android users.
